I recently returned from a convention in Atlanta where the top five percent of all financial advisors and insurance agents in the world meet each year. I had the privilege to hear a keynote presentation from an amazing individual who is the winningest basketball coach in any division in NCAA history. His name is Don Meyer of Northern State University.
For an hour he held the audience of over 6,000 in the palm of his hand as he shared his wisdom on winning life. He has an incredible story of overcoming adversity which I would encourage you to learn. If you Google “Coach Don Meyers”, you’re sure to find it.
What struck me during his presentation was the simplicity of success. He said he has a six pack every morning. i.e., he identifies the top six things to focus on during that day and then for each item he does the NBA (Next Best Action) toward checking off the items on his six pack.
Here is the interesting part. This simple statement was one that resonated with the audience consisting of people that were the best of the best in their industry. As I spoke with them and asked, “what was the game-changer they heard from the various presenters and workshops they experienced?” most of them referenced the six pack and how that was how they ran their business and their lives.
Identifying the top six things to do every day is much of what we share with the people we work with as well. In our business plans we have our clients focus on the top six things that must be achieved during the next 12 months. Focus!
On the plane ride back before I started to write this article, I dove into one of the books on my reading list. In his book Flourish, author Dr. Martin Seligman, tells a story about when he met with 100 top world leaders, and they were asked to share their life philosophies. I was struck by the answer of Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum, Ph. She answered, “Prioritize A, B & C. Discard C.” How is that for focus?
As you know, success leaves clues. The clues that have been showing up over the last 48 hours for me to pay attention to and share with you are focus, focus, focus. Avoid trying to do it all. Identify and focus on doing the most important things you must do in order to succeed.
I believe my “A” priority is to share that message with you. Now, on to priority “B.” What do you need to be focusing on? Go succeed by focusing.
Make it up, make it fun & make it happen!
