What would you do differently throughout your day if you only had time to experience joy and success?
I often hear how so much energy and effort is being directed at what people don’t want rather than what they do want. Like anybody, I can get caught in that trap from time to time as well. So, last time I did, I asked the question: What would a full day look like if it contained only those things that brought me joy and closer to my successes?
Consider for a moment if you could have one full day and set it up so that you only did things that brought you joy and success.
What would you eliminate from your calendar?
What would you say “No” to doing, thinking or being? There’s a nice liberating thought. Imagine if you really accomplished that and experienced what that actually felt like. Do you think you would find ways to be more resourceful to create more than just one day like that? You bet!
I find most people assume they just want the situations, people or circumstances they think are causing their angst to go away. They hallucinate that once that happens, then their life would be great. You know it doesn’t work that way. However, it can be nice to fantasize.
There is a way to fantasize and create a positive impact for yourself.
The other piece to eliminating or at least limiting those episodes that can create the anguish is to increase our capacity to be ok with those same episodes.
If you are going to fantasize try this. Envision and predict your future by answering these questions:
- How would you want to be with people when things may not go according to plan?
- How do you want to be when you find yourself running late?
- What do you want your experience to be when you don’t get something completed the way you had hoped?
- How do you choose to be if you or others don’t meet an expectation?
At first, these questions may seem like you are giving in or settling for less than the perfect day. oh contraire
We are not talking about lowering the standard or shirking responsibility here. We are preparing for what inevitably happens from time to time that can throw you off track. When you are off track your energy is distracted, diffused and redirected toward what you are not wanting rather than what you are wanting.
Try going in your mind rather than out of your mind. Mindfully anticipate various scenarios that tend to throw you off track. Next, come up with ways to gracefully handle an episode next time so you can maintain and direct your energy toward what you do want to experience. The trick is to stay focused on what you want to experience in any given situation.
You get to choose how you want to be. Set it up so you operate from inspiration and not desperation.
